Fernlea Care Home gets ready to deck the halls with festive fun

How the busy Lifestyle Team at Fernlea is ensuring this festive season will be one to remember

Staff and residents at a popular care home in Stockport are preparing for a Christmas packed with joy, connection, and holiday cheer.

With an impressive lineup of activities and events, the team at Fernlea is ensuring this festive season is one to remember.

Located next to Torkington Park, Fernlea is the flagship service of the family-run Olea Care Group, which operates three care homes across Manchester.

Known for its warm, community-focused atmosphere, Fernlea goes all out for Christmas, transforming the home into a winter wonderland of lights, music, and decorations.

The festivities are spearheaded by Fernlea’s dedicated Lifestyles Team – Beverly, Julie, Wendy and Tracey – whose mission is to enhance residents’ daily lives through meaningful activities.

From cultural and social events to personal moments of connection, the team works tirelessly to ensure every resident feels valued, supported, and included especially during the holidays

Christmas cheer tor all

Recognising that the festive season can amplify feelings of loneliness or loss for some older people, the Lifestyles Team aims to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every resident can enjoy the holidays at their own pace.

Beverly, Fernlea’s Lifestyle Lead, said: “Our residents aren’t just receiving care – they’re at home here.

“At Christmas, the value of our Lifestyles Team truly shines, as they bring joy, nostalgia, and connection to everyone.”

This December, Fernlea has planned a series of events for residents, families, and friends, including a Christmas Fair featuring local vendors; the Annual Christmas Video, starring residents, relatives, and staff; and festive-themed activities designed to bring people together in the spirit of the season.

Opportunities to connect

Fernlea’s activities extend beyond the festive season, with year-round programmes fostering friendships and community spirit.

Residents have countless opportunities to socialise and connect, from quiz nights and a ladies’ book club to ‘Pie and a Pint’ gatherings for the gentlemen.

One of the highlights of Fernlea’s Lifestyles programme is the onsiteFernbees Nursery, which promotes intergenerational bonding.

Residents, fondly called ‘GrandBees’, join children from the nursery, ‘the Little Bees’, for activities that bring laughter and warmth to both generations.

Beverly continued: “The joy our residents feel when spending time with the children is heartwarming.

“It’s truly special to see the mutual benefits of these interactions.”

Smiles and laughter

Beverly, who has been with Fernlea for nearly 10 years, is pivotal in ensuring the events reflect residents’ interests.

Her dedication shines through in every celebration, from sourcing outside entertainment to handcrafting props.

She smiled: “Getting to know our residents and tailoring activities to their interests is incredibly rewarding.

“Seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter makes all the effort worth it.”

A holly jolly home

From festive costumes to carol singalongs, the Christmas magic at Fernlea wouldn’t be complete without the enthusiastic involvement of staff.

Whether donning costumes as part of the holiday fun or simply sharing a cup of tea, every team member creates a joyous atmosphere.

Fernlea’s commitment to fostering a sense of belonging ensures that, for residents, Christmas truly feels like home.
