Tributes paid to ‘loveable’ taxi driver ‘known by everyone’ in Stockport

Tributes have been paid to a ‘loveable’ taxi driver from Stockport who passed away suddenly aged 55.

Peter Connelly, known affectionately as Chez or Big Chez, died at home in Romiley on August 30.

He lived in Stockport his entire life and was ‘known by everyone’ in the local community for his ‘big personality’.

He worked as a taxi driver and would make everybody’s journeys ‘ones to remember’, his family has said in a touching tribute.

Peter leaves behind two children, Simone Connelly, 33, and Jordan Ruchat, 29, and nine grandchildren, Sean, Grace, Chayse, Chanel, Kobe, Clae, Gypsy-Rose, Archie and Max.

Speaking to the M.E.N , Simone and Jordan said their dad was much-loved by everyone in the area.

He grew up in Adswood before moving to Romiley.

Before becoming a taxi driver, Peter used to deliver packages for Parcel Line, his family said.

He then worked as a steward at Stockport County Football Club, where he would take his kids to watch the matches.

Peter went on to run his own private hire business which involved him driving for the casts of Shameless and Downton Abbey, before working for 1919 Taxis for a number of years.

Peter continued working as a taxi driver until he sadly passed away.

Jordan, who described his dad as ‘the biggest Arsenal fan in Stockport’, said: “If you were stuck somewhere or needed a lift my dad would be the person you’d call, everyone would say ‘call Chez’.

“He would be the go-to-guy.”

Jordan said his dad was a ‘happy-chappy’ person, who was always smiling.

“He would always put a smile on peoples faces when they got into the car”, he said.

“He was one of those people who was never in a mood.

“That’s what we’re all going to miss.

“He just lived his life being him.”

Simone added: “He was just a very lovable man with a big personality.

“We’ve had loads of messages since he died saying how sorry people are for our loss and telling us stories about our dad.”

The family said they were left ‘shocked’ by Peter’s death after he died suddenly at home.

They are still waiting for post-mortem results.

Jordan and Simone are now raising funds to help towards their dad’s funeral costs.

The fundraiser hit its target in just 24 hours, Jordan said, and the family hope to give him the ‘best send-off’ they can.
