Neighbours on a street in Cheadle are celebrating after winning thousands of pounds on the Postcode Lottery.
The Chorlton Drive players discovered they’d won £30,000 each when they received golden envelopes through their door.
Mum Helen Barber, 40, had only been playing for two months when she received her envelope at home with her two-year-old son.
“I thought to myself, ‘Really? Is this real?’ I was ecstatic,” she says.
“I was dancing around the kitchen. My little boy was laughing at me.
“My partner works away in London, so it was just me and my little boy getting ready for lunch. He didn’t really know what was going on, he just thought I was going mad.
“My partner will be back tonight so we might venture into town tonight to celebrate.”
Helen plans to use her winnings to treat herself and her family to a holiday in the sun.
She said: “I think we’ll go on a really, really nice holiday next year.
“We were supposed to go on holiday with my brother and his little boy but had to put that on hold. It was going to be our first holiday together, so we’ll definitely do that when we can.
“I think we’ll probably go to Greece. It was meant to be Spain but I can change my mind now.”
When asked how she’d be celebrating, Helen said her mum popped over ten minutes after she received the letter, so they went to a bakery and got a piece of cake to celebrate.
“I still can’t believe it,” she says. “It’s still not sunk in. It just gives me some piece of mind.”
Nick Fish, 43, was another £30,000 winner who received a letter in the post.
He said: “My wife was there when I got the letter, but I didn’t tell her at first.
“I always watch the adverts and how great it would be if someone came to the door. But getting a golden envelope through the post is just as good.
“I never ever win anything, not even a raffle. I never thought I’d have a big win.”
Nick, who has an 18-month-year-old son, says the win has come at a great time for him and his wife.
He said: “It’s just great and so brilliant. It will come in handy so much. It’s the perfect time.
“We actually bought this house to do up, but then our first baby came along so all the money went towards him, so this will come in handy. We can put some money away for his future.
“The first thing we’ll plan a holiday. I’m sure my wife will be wanting a handbag though. I’ll need some advice on which one to buy.
“We went to Malta last December for a cheap trip away, and just before this we were planning on doing the same again. We’ll leave it a few months and hopefully things will settle down so we can go again in December just before Christmas.
“It couldn’t have come at a better time to be honest. It will set us up for the future.”
The other seven winners chose to remain anonymous but will still receive their winnings.
People’s Postcode Lottery costs £10 a month to play and there are guaranteed winners every day. People play with their chosen postcode and are automatically entered into all draws.
People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Judie McCourt spoke to the Cheadle winners over video call.
She said: “Congratulations to Helen, Nick and all of other Cheadle winners. It sounds like they’ll be putting the money to good use and treating their families to some nice holidays away in the sun. I hope the other winners enjoy spending the cash too!”
A minimum of 32 per cent of ticket sales goes directly to charities and players of People’s Postcode Lottery have helped raise more than £600 million to date for good causes across Great Britain and internationally.
This draw was promoted by Plan International UK which has received over £8.7 million in funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery to advance children’s rights and equality for girls all over the world.
