If you’ve eaten at a Miller & Carter steakhouse then you’ll be all too familiar with the wedge of lettuce that arrives before your meat.
The award-winning steak chain hit the headlines last year after revealing exactly why diners are served the unusual dish, which usually comes three minutes before the steak arrives, while it is resting.
The ‘masters of steak’, with restaurants on King Street in the city centre, and across Greater Manchester in Stockport, Bury and near Wigan, took to social media to provide what they called a ‘wedgucation’ on why they serve the leafy side.
According to the food chain, the wedge is ‘a refreshing appetiser which perfectly complements the rich flavours of steak’. The wedge provides a cold crisp texture to accompany the steak.

But now the humble lettuce has sparked debate once again after one customer asked when and how it should be eaten. In a light-hearted posted on the Dull Men’s Centre Facebook page, he asked: “My questions are twofold…..
“1/ Should it in fact be treated as a starter or amuse-bouche, [a small, bite-sized complimentary dish served before a meal or between courses], or wait until the actual main dish arrives?
“B/ How should it be eaten? I go with the knife and fork, the wife just tears it with her hands.”
Hundreds of people responded to the post, giving their opinion on the dish, which comes with a choice of five dressings.
These include classic vinaigrette, Long Clawson stilton and blue cheese, bacon and honey mustard, garlic mayonnaise and Grana Padano, and spicy burnt chilli and crispy onions.

“I eat half when it arrives, and have the other half with my steak as a salad garnish,” said one.
“I kinda prod it a bit trying to work out the cleanest politest most civilised way to eat a wedge of lettuce in a tiny bowl then eventually give up,” said another.
A third said she’d always thought the concept was ‘very bizarre’, adding: “My husband was expecting a starter of potato wedges, he was very disappointed when a quarter of a lettuce came out lol.”
But another said it was their favourite part, adding: “Lettuce wedge is without a doubt the best bit of the meal. Best lettuce I’ve ever had in my life!”
