A group of masked thieves armed with a sledge hammer stormed a Spar shop in Stockport and ripped a cash machine open.
The gang of three men piled into the shop on North Park Road in Bramhall armed with the weapon.
The shop was open to customers at the time of the incident.
The thieves then attached a chain to a cash machine inside the store, police said.
The other end of the chain was attached a silver Vauxhall Astra parked outside the shop.
A fourth male then used the force of the car to prise open the ATM.
The thieves were able to steal from cash inside before fleeing the scene in the Astra.
Staff at the store were left ‘shaken’ after the incident but thankfully were not hurt.
The thieves fled in direction of Midland Road before abandoning the car on Yeardsley Road.
They then ran across Rocket Park before getting into a second vehicle – a blue Audi – on Parkside Walk.
Police said the four men were all dressed in dark clothing and wearing balaclava type masks.
One offender was believed to be a black male, around 5ft10 tall and of slim build.
