Man detained by police after climbing on to roof in Stockport

A man has been arrested after climbing onto the roof of an apartment block in Stockport.

Officers were called to Councillor Lane in Cheadle at around 2.45pm on Friday (19 March) after a man was seen on the roof of a building.

Eye witnesses reported seeing a man throw objects from the roof, in the direction of police, although this has not been confirmed by GMP.

Councillor Lane, near to the Late Shop convenience store, was cordoned off.

The man, aged 46, was safely escorted down from the roof and detained, police said.

He has since been taken into custody where he remains for questioning.

The Manchester Evening News understands the man was wanted by police on suspicion of breaching a court order.

A spokesperson for GMP said: “Police attended after a man was seen on the roof of a building on Councillor Lane, Stockport at around 2.45pm on Friday 19 March 2021.

“The man, aged 46, was safely escorted down from the roof and detained. He remains in custody.”

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to the scene after reports of a concern for welfare.

“We haven’t taken anyone into hospital,” they added.
